There’s a real sense of lived experience in this chapter, the routines, the winter mornings, the affection for the animals, and the way the land shapes the day. It all feels grounded and heartfelt. ~ Nerra ⚔️⚡️⚖️
Nerra, thank you for this feedback. It helps tremendously. I am trying to set a “feeling” about life in the Karoo before I bring in different happenings, people etc. 💞
This pulled me right in. The detail, the pace, the cold biting through the page, everything about it feels lived in. You write with a quiet strength that makes the story breathe. I felt the tension, the tenderness, the work, the risk. Beautiful chapter.
The story felt really real, like you could feel the cold wind and smell the tea. Blaze’s care for the animals and her family is touching, and seeing her finally recognized and loved by her family is heartwarming.😊💙
The second chapter captures the harsh beauty of a Karoo winter as Blaze moves through her chores with quiet strength, revealing her deep bond with the animals and her growing importance on the farm. Her father’s worries hang heavily in the cold air, yet her instinct and care earn his trust in a way that warms the story. The shift into the home, where she is given the plum dress and new shoes, brings a rare softness, and when she steps into the dining room and is met with admiration instead of judgment, Blaze experiences a brief but powerful moment of belonging, unaware of the challenges still waiting ahead.
I love this precious piece of writing so very much.
When I lived in Cape Town, we had some relatives who lived in Calvinia.
I became so “vlot” in my Afrikaans after a visit there.
My mum always made us the most beautiful clothes on her Singer. She also hand sewed so much.
I have some examples of her fine work which gives me joy even as I still grieve for Mum gone 24/6 this year, and my Uncle Robin just 6 weeks before that.
Thank you for reminding me of good times.
Kindest regards and the deepest respect for your talent
Thank you Carol. I wish I had visited Calvinia. We drove from Joburg to Cape through Kimberly. I have such a soft spot for Karoo. I truly hope to visit again. Thank you for your continued support. 💞
